Why has the price of Branston products gone up?

The cost of manufacturing our Pickles, Piccalillis, and Rich & Fruity Sauce – comprising everything from sourcing the high-quality veggies and ingredients to energy, packaging, and transportation costs of the finished product – has risen significantly in recent years.  

Branston remains committed to producing the same recipe you have known and loved for over 100 years. Rather than compromising on the care, tradition, and quality ingredients that goes into every jar of Branston, we have made the difficult decision to adjust prices to reflect these increased costs. 

Is the product smaller or has the recipe changed with the price change?

Not at all, you can rest assured that neither the size nor recipe of our Pickles, Piccalillis, or Rich & Fruity Sauce has changed. The reason for the cost increase is to ensure that Branston continues to deliver the same great taste and quality you expect – without cutting any corners! 

I feel disappointed with the price change – how can I share my feedback?

Do you offer discounts or vouchers?

We don’t currently offer discounts or vouchers directly, but we work with retailers to offer promotions across our Pickles, Piccalillis, and Rich & Fruity Sauce throughout the year, particularly over your favourite holidays! Keep an eye out in-store and online for special offers and discounts.  

Gluten Free FAQs

We’ve been working together with Coeliac UK to add a gluten-free claim and the Crossed Grain trademark to our all of our Branston Pickles & Piccalillis. Together, we’ve made the necessary changes at our Bury St Edmunds site to ensure we can claim our products are gluten-free so that the coeliac community can enjoy the hit of home that Branston provides!

How have you ensured that Branston’s products are gluten-free certified?

Branston’s gluten-free status on our Pickles (Original, Small Chunk, Smooth) and Piccalillis (Original, Small Chunk) has been approved by Coeliac UK.

All Branston Pickles and Piccalillis finished products contains less than 20ppm which is the agreed standard to be able to declare a product gluten-free and suitable for coeliacs.

It is important to note that in the ingredients list, Barley from Barley Malt Vinegar & Barley Malt Extract is highlighted as an allergen. All and any allergens are shown in bold on the ingredient label in line with regulatory requirements.

As Branston Pickles (Original, Small Chunk, Smooth) and Piccalillis (Original, Small Chunk) contain less than 20ppm; we can label them as gluten-free and highlight ‘cereal containing gluten’ at the same time.

What does 20ppm mean? Foods containing 20 parts per million (ppm) gluten or less. Only foods that contain 20 ppm or less can be labelled as gluten-free.

Which Branston products are gluten-free certified?

All Branston Pickle and Piccalilli products are now certified gluten-Free by the Coeliac UK which includes:

Which Branston products are not gluten-free certified?

We’re still working behind the scenes to ensure that most (if not all) Branston products are Gluten-free Certified, however we are still working on the following

  • Branston Rich & Fruity sauce 245g

What’s the difference between a gluten intolerance and barley allergy?

The gluten-free claim is for foods suitable for those with coeliac disease and related conditions, whereas the allergen labelling requirements in Annex II to the FIC relate to food information for people with a true food allergy to ‘cereals containing gluten’.

People with food allergy can suffer ‘true’ IgE-mediated allergic reactions to a range of proteins found in ‘cereals containing gluten’ (including gluten, but also albumins, globulins, α-amylase inhibitors, and lipid transfer proteins for example), hence it is required by regs to highlight the cereal containing gluten regardless of the amount of gluten present.

At the same time, regulations permit product to be labelled as ‘Gluten Free’ (if less than 20ppm) as it is suitable for coeliacs (Non-IgE mediated reactions).

As Branston Pickles (Original, Small Chunk, Smooth) and Piccalillis (Original, Small Chunk) contain less than 20ppm; we can label them as Gluten free & highlight ‘cereal containing gluten’ at the same time.

When will your labels be updated with the Crossed Grain trademark?

We are currently in the process of rolling out our new labels updated with the Crossed Grain trademark. This can sometimes take a couple of months before they start rolling out on the shelves, so watch this space towards the end of 2025!

We do want to assure you however, that even without the logo on-pack our Pickles & Piccalillis are still gluten-free.

What type of Chilli have you used in Chilli Piccalilli?

As if the addicting piccalilli tang wasn’t enough, we have used Kashmiri Chilli Flakes and Kashmiri Chilli Powder to balance both flavour and heat and boost your piccalilli experience – only the best for our favourite humans!

How can I use Chilli Piccalilli?

We’ve got your back!

If you’re an Original or Small Chunk Piccalilli fan, then you know how tang-tastically Chilli Piccalilli would go with the meals you currently have piccalilli with. However, we personally love Chilli Piccalilli on a burger or wrap for an extra flavour hit!

If you’re new – welcome! We’re quite famous for how amazing we taste in toasties, sandwiches, or cheeseboards.

Why am I finding Chilli Piccalilli to be hotter/milder than the rating on pack?

We get it, all our Branston fans perceive heat differently – that’s what makes you all so unique (We love you equally though)!

However, our chilli rating has been set with the help of Branston’s chilli experts, who put Chilli Piccalilli to the test and found it to be ‘mild’ on our mild/medium/hot scale.

Where can I Buy Branston Products?

You’ll find them in all major supermarkets and corner shops, as well as many online sellers. We are so sorry we are not able to tell you which branch of a supermarket our products may be in as this is decided by the retailer.

Why do I need to use a spoon when using Branston products that are in a jar?

When serving Branston we always suggest using a spoon to make it easier for you to serve our product, whether it’s ontop of your favourite sandwich or on a cheeseboard!

Can I recycle your packaging?

Where do the ingredients come from?

We source our ingredients from across the UK for each of our products, to make sure we give you the very best Branston products.

What can I reuse a Branston jar for?

There are many, many options to reuse our Branston jars – fill with LED fairy lights in the garden, use to store odds and ends, decorate and paint to make a statement or refill with homemade goodies to name but a few!  Your imagination (or google search skills) really is the limit! Though if you are creating edibles that will be stored and need an airtight seal (for example jams, chutneys or pickles) we recommend you purchase & use new lids. 

Do I need to keep Branston products in the fridge?

What can I do if I want to print out your recipes?

We’re so glad you’re enjoying our monthly Branston recipes! Unfortunately, at the moment we don’t have the recipes in a printable format, but if you take a screenshot of the recipe and paste this onto a word document you’ll be able to print out the recipes.

Where are your products made?

We make all our Branston Sweet Pickle, Rich & Fruity and Piccalilli products in our factory in Bury St Edmunds, made by the amazing Branston master picklers….or at least that’s what we like to call them!

We also make a range of partnership products, including Branston Beans, Branston Pork Pies and Branston & Cathedral city snack packs, which are made in factories across the UK.   If you have any queries or questions about these products please refer to the information on pack for the manufacturers contact details as we are unable to answer these enquiries. 

Why does Branston Smooth Sweet Pickle not have any vegetable chunks in it?

Branston Smooth Sweet Pickle is the perfect product for people that prefer not to have vegetable chunks in their Branston. So, whether you’re a Smooth fan or love the vegetable chunks you can find in our Branston Small Chunk or Branston Original Sweet Pickle we’ve got a product just for you!

Do you provide charity donations or hampers for raffles?

We love to support great initiatives and as a business we already partner with our chosen charities as well as working closely with local food banks.  Currently we are not able to support individual requests

How long do Branston products last for?

We have a large range, so do feel free to check the label on the back of each of our products, where you’ll find it’s product storage instructions, and on the cap of our products, where you’ll find the best before date of the product.

There is a problem with my Branston sweet pickle/piccalilli/rich & fruity. What can I do about this?

I can’t find Branston products in my country. How can I get hold of them?

Whilst Branston is available in some countries such as Australia and South Africa via our export department, we are a UK stocked brand. However, this online shop delivers internationally.

Where can I find Branstonnaise?

At this time we’re no longer selling Branstonnaise, but we’re currently in development to see how we can improve this product and bring it out in the future.

I can’t find Rich & Fruity Sauce. Where is it?

It is still being sold and you should be able to find it in large Morrisons and Sainsbury’s stores.
